San Juan Sanitation Co. has been named WRRA’s 2026 Company of the Year. The award was presented to the company’s Vice President, Calvin Den Hartog, and General Manager, Logan Luft, at an Awards Luncheon during the WRRA Annual Meeting in July.
San Juan Sanitation Co has been serving the San Juan islands since 1966. Purchased in 1988 by current President, Dan Leidecker, and Tom Luft, the company has grown substantially over the last three-plus decades into the enterprise it is today, offering curbside garbage and recycling to ferry-served and remote islands as well as hauling other goods necessary for construction in the many remote building sites across the island community.

Operating in the San Juan Islands poses unique challenges for the company, including timing services around tides, navigating beach landings, and moving trucks and equipment by boat. The unusual island environment can often result in challenges relating to weather, terrain, or even breakdowns of vital ferries and docks. The company attributes its success and growth to the hard work of its employees and great culture of teamwork, dedication and perseverance.
The Washington Refuse & Recycling Association is proud to award San Juan Sanitation Co. with the 2026 Company of the Year Award.
